Google、Motorolaを29.1億ドルでLenovoに売却！

モバイル業界に激震！衝撃的なニュースが舞い込んできた！

Google公式ブログによると、GoogleはMotorolaを30億ドルでLenovoに売却することを正式に発表した！

競争率の激しいスマートフォン市場で戦い抜くために売却

GoogleがMotorolaを買収したのは2012年。買収額125億ドルという、過去最大級の買収と言われていたが、2年以内に売り払うことになってしまったようだ。

GoogleのCEO Larry Page氏によると、Motorola買収後に発売した「Moto G」や「Moto X」は好調であると前置きしつつ、競争率の激しいスマートフォン市場で戦い抜くためにはMotorolaをLenovoに売却した方が好ましいと判断したとのこと。Googleは今後Androidのエコシステム全体の拡大に注力し、特にGoogle Glassなどウェアラブルデバイスに対してリソースを集中させたいようだ。

As a side note, this does not signal a larger shift for our other hardware efforts. The dynamics and maturity of the wearable and home markets, for example, are very different from that of the mobile industry. We’re excited by the opportunities to build amazing new products for users within these emerging ecosystems.

買収後、Motorolaブランドは継続される予定。また、元々MotorolaがGoogleに買収されたのは保有している特許をAndroidに適応したいという意図があったとされているが、Googleは売却後も特許のほとんどを保有し続けると発表している。アメリカと中国にはまだ承認されていないため、まだ売却完了まではしばらく時間が掛かる見通し。

まとめると、Googleはスマートフォン本体に注力するのではなく、ウェアラブルデバイスなどを中心にAndroidを利用したエコシステム全体に注力したいようだ。
